The Berliner Festspiele Founded in 1951, the Berliner Festspiele form a series of international festivals for the performing arts and culture. They are aimed at promoting and developing the relationship and communication between arts and artists, both in Europe and worldwide. The various festivals cover a diverse array of performances in music, theatre, dance and literature, from leading performers, many of whom fuse several art-forms. Exhibitions of cultural history, archaeology and modern photography add to the rich and innovative Berliner Festspiele. This year the theme is ‘Among Friends’, drawing on the collective spirit of the event and presenting an invitation to all those who would like to take part. Two public debates, ‘Images of friends and enemies’ and ‘New friends and forms of cultural exchange’, will continue the exploration of this theme. Performances will also take place at the Deutsches Theater, the Maxim Gorki Theater, the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz and the Sophiensæle.
