Witnesses to the 20th century. Various artists throughout the 20th century criss-crossed the globe in their quest for diverse sources of inspiration. What remains of their travels are old papers, journals from another era and a few bits of recollection and history compiled in Claude Lagoutte's work, "Indian Journal". Whether they take the form of water colours, drawings or washes, what these pieces all have in common is their ability to leave the artist free to move, a necessary prerequisite for capturing another view of an outdoor scene or a surprising landscape. The creators of these canvases now stored in the museum's collection had but one desire: to convey what they saw, so that others could imagine what they had experienced. The result is historical records of rare beauty.
