Celebrated artist, controversial man The life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat can be captured in two words: ephemeral and intense. The New York artist, who died of an overdose at the tender age of 28, gained notoriety early on. In 1977, the 17-year-old Basquiat chose to express himself through graffiti, which he signed using his pseudonym Samo. In just three years, his work found exhibitors; after that, things took off at high speed. This contemporary artist - part of the Figuration Libre movement - was quickly singled out by his peers. His fame began to dog him, as did the suffering and paranoia that are common by-products of drug abuse. He formed significant friendships, notably with Andy Warhol, with whom he worked on many paintings. But no one was able to free him from the grip of heroin. One year after the death of his master and friend, the talented and precocious Basquiat also passed away.
