Far from the Amazons of myth Nomadic tribes, especially the Scythians and Sarmatians, have often been portrayed as barbarians. But meticulous digs north of the Black Sea and in the region of the Don and Kouban delta have turned up a very different reality. This can be confirmed by studying the sophisticated way in which these civilizations worked gold and precious stones, transforming them into adornments or using them to decorate their mirrors and weapons. The Amazons were exposed to Greek art very early on, and were inspired by the wealth of that culture. Far from being a civilization of men-haters, as is so often claimed, this nomadic society demonstrated a remarkable even-handedness in the distribution of daily work - something to think about!
