A woman painter - how extraordinary! Although the young painter Berthe Morisot caused a lot of ink to flow in the latter half of the 19th century, it was not necessarily because of her artistic talent - her widely-acknowledged shortcoming (apart from the fact that she was an Impressionist!) was that she was a woman. Even Manet, who used her as a model, could not bring himself to depart from the all-pervading male chauvinism of the time when he said of Berthe and her sister that they were such charming young ladies - it's a pity they weren't men! Despite such criticism, the artist proved that her work was just as good as that of her fellow painters. For those who remain sceptical, this retrospective, the first in France for 40 years, demonstrates how courageously and successfully she asserted herself, always with grace and femininity but, above all, with determination.
