Moorish reflections Skilful master potters have handed down the techniques and traditions of the pottery known variously as faience, majolica and lustreware from generation to generation. Perfected by the Moors in the 9th century, the secret of the technique was carried to Spain, where it was as preciously guarded as a cache of buried treasure. This earthenware pottery, with its distinctive metallic reflections, is being exhibited in France for the first time. Made in Spain from the 12th to the 18th centuries, it soon found a home in the palaces of the caliphs. Decorated in praise of Allah, many pieces survived the fall of the Muslim kingdom of Grenada in 1492 to go on to grace the tables of Christendom's popes and princes. These handmade jewels from another age bear witness to the elegance and refinement of Moorish art.
