The master of modern art Initially attracted to Impressionism, Cézanne broke away and invented a style that made him a forerunner of 20th-century art. The master's paintings were characterized by a hint of Cubism and a touch of the abstract, aesthetic ideas whose embryonic essentials could be detected in Cézanne's imaginative, creative sensibility well before they became elements of established movements. The true extent of his talent, however, was only fully appreciated after his death. Nowadays, one only needs to be in the presence of one of his beautiful paintings to be persuaded of the artist's exceptional, visionary influence.
