Two brothers, two approaches to art René and Jean-Gabriel Domergue were both artists at heart. The former expressed his passion through his pen; the latter through his paintbrush. René, an art critic and collector, enjoyed a mixture of genres in the works he collected. An admirer of Louis Valtat, he built up spectacular collections that never failed to include his brother's works. Jean-Gabriel was greatly influenced by the work of the painter and famous poster artist Chéret. Like his master, he developed a passion for feminine portraits, working his way through the Parisian smart set and adding his own take on the prevalent clichés and stereotypes, eventually producing more than 3,000 works. His favourite models ranged from the child-woman to the femme fatale. The bourgeoisie and the politicians liked what they saw, so the artist's portraits were in great demand. Critics were less unanimous in their approval and even went so far as to ignore his work in favour of the Cubists. This exhibition pays homage to these two men by highlighting the collector's artistic choices and by giving prominence to the painter's work.
