The largest donation ever made by this artist Nice could be called the French cradle of Nouveau Realism. Niki de Saint Phalle was aware of this when she took part in the first Nouveau Realism festival organized by the town in 1961. On 11 October 2001, as a mark of gratitude, she made a donation to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, thus creating the second-largest European collection devoted to this world-famous artist. The 170 pieces, which include paintings, lithographs, sculptures and other original documents, are all on show as part of this retrospective. Some works virtually unknown to the general public are being exhibited in France for the first time in over 20 years.
