Acting out the ambiguity in relationships The Finnish filmmaker Eija-Liisa Ahtila likes to tinker with the private lives of individuals belonging to the same family, social or friendship group. By experimenting with the narrative structures and language used in advertising and television films, she examines the way in which the female body is portrayed by the media. Her films owe as much to contemporary visual and video art as they do to video clips and television commercials. The exhibition presents the main body of her work from 1990 onwards, with an emphasis on her mini psychodramas, which are filmed in a style reminiscent of commercials. Personal and collective traumas provide the inspirational grist for the mill of this artist and accomplished filmmaker.
