Thrust into the limelight by her slide show entitled The Ballad of Sexual Dependence, which was presented in bars and nightclubs in 1978, this famous photographer was shunned for a long time by the photographic fraternity. Nor was her work readily accepted by photographic art lovers, who considered it a disturbing and voyeuristic embarrassment. It took considerable determination on her part to win recognition for her photos in artistic circles. But now, Spain is staging its first-ever exhibition and retrospective of the American photographer's work, including more than 300 photos taken between 1972 and 2001 and three slide-projection installations.
