If he fails to respond, Fulton lets the matter drop; but if his spirit seems receptive, the artist in him then takes charge of the situation. He begins by photographing whatever it was that stirred his enthusiasm, and then shuts himself away to sculpt this vision of a bountiful nature. These stages are an essential part of Hamish Fulton's work. He puts it this way: "If I don't walk, I can't create a work of art".
