Fashion photography gains recognition at last. Richard Avedon became famous by photographing the harshest side of human nature. He believed that this would bring him the recognition as an artist that he was unlikely to receive for his fashion photographs. Perhaps he was mistaken, because Mario Testino, who followed his instinct with light-hearted photographs of beautiful women, now enjoys undoubted fame as an artist. His portrait of a relaxed, unpretentious and very approachable Princess Diana illustrates the photographer's human and artistic side. The best measure of Testino's fame as an artist is this National Portrait Gallery exhibition devoted entirely to his work.
