Witness to change. Bernd Bechers, professor of photography at the Art Academy, gave new impetus to the city of Düsseldorf in 1976. He and his wife Hilla are well-known for their monochromes and have inspired a whole new generation of photographers. Their fame has attracted the best in the profession to Düsseldorf, including Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky and Jörg Sasse, all of whom were taught by the master and practised their art in the town. Other figures not connected with the Academy, such as Lothar Baumgarten, Katharina Silverding and Hans-Peter Feldman, have also lived, worked and documented changes in the city that pays tribute to them today.
