A history of the sexes. In the Indonesian archipelago, you don't mix different individual roles. Whether male or female, there is a strict classification of appropriate tasks. So 'kris,' or metal working, is strictly for men since it mainly consists of manufacturing daggers, an unquestioned phallic symbol. Women work with textiles, and it is unthinkable to stray from this sex-related distribution of roles for daily tasks. It is the basis for an entire system of thought, as well as a culture and its arts that are imbued with this masculine-feminine divide.
