The stylist of the 20th century. The career of the Italian designer Gio Ponti exploded after World War I, peaking near the end of his life, in the 1970s. An architect by training, Ponti was strongly influenced by architecture in his work as a designer. But the artist also wanted to avoid the beaten path, and so tried his hand at ceramics and the creation of furniture, wallpaper and decorative sculptures. Gio Ponti was equally inspired by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements and by the Minimalist style. The Italian designer never lost his knack for making surprising professional choices, a propensity amply demonstrated by his forays into poetry-writing and publishing. Gio Ponti is nothing if not a complete artist.
