Concorde La Fayette

The chapel was moved approximately 10 metres and rebuilt stone by stone by the architect Bazelaire de Rupière, assisted by Mr. Denizet, chief architect for Monuments in Paris. It is now situated on the corner of the Avenue de la Porte des Ternes and the Boulevard Aurelle de Paladines. Between the two World Wars, the funfair "Luna Parc", with its big dippers and halls of mirrors, stood on the site now occupied by the Paris Convention Centre and the Hotel Concorde La Fayette. However, the town council was already making plans to develop this important gateway to the capital and various architects were invited to submit proposals, firstly in 1920 and then again in 1930. Participants included A. Perret, Le Corbusier and Gilbert, who wanted to create a huge park on the site. After the Second World War, the site was occupied by a number of temporary buildings belonging to various Government ministries. In 1960, the increasing number of tourists and conventions coming to Paris encouraged the Tourism Committee and the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry to initiate a development programme for the Porte Maillot area. This was spearheaded by the architects Henri Guibout, Serge Malolentkov and Yves Betin. Guillaume Gillet, who had won the Grand Prix de Rome, was appointed to co-ordinate the projects. Planning permission was granted by the Ministry of Housing and Development on 11 May 1971. The Convention Centre was opened on 28 February 1974 after three years of construction work. The Hotel Concorde La Fayette opened on 29 March 1974. Architect, painter and writer, Guillaume Gillet came to prominence during the 1950s when he was responsible for designing and overseeing the building of a number of key structures. These included the church of Notre Dame de Royan at Charente-Maritime, which was completed in 1958 and classified as an historic building some years later. Also in 1958, Gillet unveiled his Pavilion of France, designed and built for the Universal Exposition of Brussels. Other projects included the School of the Magistrature of Bordeaux, the New Century Palais in Lille, the Pont de La Bourse and, in 1974, the Palais des Congrès of Paris and the Hotel Concorde La Fayette. At a height of 140 meters, the Concorde La Fayette dominates the French Capital and crowns the International Centre of Paris. It was the first skyscraper to be built in Paris and the first IGH (great height tower hotel) in Europe. From its opening in 1974, the Concorde La Fayette was one of the most technologically advanced hotels in the world a position that it has maintained thanks to a continuous programme of investment and improvement.
