The Ile de la Cité is one of two islands in the River Seine, the other being Ile Saint Louis, and is the location where the city was founded. There has been a palace at the western end of the Island since Roman times. The eastern end was devoted to religion and in the 10th century a cathedral was constructed that preceded the Notre Dame. The remaining land is today the location of the city’s Prefecture de Police, Palais de Justice, Tribunal de Commerce and Hôtel-Dieu hospital.
