This is France’s leading carnival, and even back in 1294, the year in which it was first mentioned, it already was a major event. In the 16th century, carnival merrymaking was structured around masked balls, each one reserved to a specific social class. The French Revolution put an end to those festivities, which started up again in 1873 in a more modern format: a parade of floats and farcical “big heads” escorting His Majesty Carnival I.
