The London Symphony Orchestra, music and cinema, classical concert

Friday, March 15 2013

Classic Hollywood.

ET, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report... Many successful films were made featuring the collaboration of Steven Spielberg and John Williams. Since they met in 1974 for the filming of Sugarland Express, the two men have worked continuously together. So much that a single bar of music by Williams in enough to evoke Spielberg's films.

Playing with multiple references and hidden quotes, from Schubert to Berg, via Mahler and Brahms, John Williams's music is perfectly controlled and efficient, heir to a century of Hollywood music, it is both synthesis and an emblem.

But this duo would be nothing without a third - essential - character: the London Symphony Orchestra, companion of the composer and first performer of almost all of these soundtracks.
