Yue Minjun, The Shadow of the Crazy Laugh, exhibition

From Wednesday, November 14 2012 to Sunday, March 17 2013

Chinese cynicism.

This winter, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art presents the first major exhibition in Europe to be devoted to Chinese artist Yue Minjun. A unique opportunity to discover the work of this widely celebrated yet discreet contemporary artist.

Revisiting the codes of the grotesque, using colourful iconography, his works are haunted by characters frozen in enigmatic laughter.

Minjun's paintings offer an ironic and cynical vision of contemporary Chinese society and more generally of the human condition in the modern world.

Through some 40 paintings on loan from collections around the world, as well as numerous drawings which have never before been exhibited in public, the exhibition reveals the complex and singular aesthetic of a body work which is beyond interpretation.
