The municipality of Marseille started building Palais Longchamp in 1862 to celebrate the arrival of the waters of the Durance river in the city. The work, which was supervised by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu, the same architect who built the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, was on a colossal scale since it involved building no less than 18 aqueduct bridges and involved years of hard toil to dig an 85 km long tunnel that enabled the inauguration of the “château” in 1869.
Palais Longchamp, which is listed as a historic monument, now houses two museums: the Musée des Beaux-Arts museum which displays paintings, sculptures and drawings of the 16th to 19th centuries, and the Natural History Museum, which was rated as a “top class” museum in 1967 on a par with only nine other major museums in France.
The gardens of Palais Longchamp also housed a zoo until 1987, and currently house the observatory of Marseille, nowadays a centre where data gleaned from the greatest telescopes in the world and the leading space experiments is processed, as well as a lab for developing new scientific instruments. The main research themes are focused on the study of galaxies and interstellar space.
