Chagall in Wonderland
Complesso del Vittoriano
9th March to 1st July 2007
website
Embracing an entire lifetime’s work, this exhibition, ‘Chagall in Wonderland’ (Chagall delle meraviglie), is a tribute to the intricacy so often missed in the great Russian’s masterpieces. Influenced by several 20th century artistic movements - cubism, surrealism and expressionism - Chagall’s works demonstrate a delicate fusion of such influences with an overlying poetic theme, often regarded as an apparent carefree style. This understated complexity and fairytale-like air, however, have given rise to the popular belief that Chagall is one of the most independent and innovatory painters of the last century.
The integration of Russian places and traditions stemming from his childhood, such as festivals and religious rituals, ‘…speak volumes about the inner life and travels of an artist who used memory not only to remember, but also to invent...’ (www.romeguide.it). Such references to culture and tradition provide an intimate view of Chagall’s personal experiences and ideological perspective.
This magical collection comprises around 180 masterpieces, including gouaches, drawings, sculptures and engravings. Works have been provided by public museums and private collections from around the world and document the human and artistic itinerary of the painter.
Eros
Colosseum
3rd March to 16th September 2007
website
A breathtaking and inspiring building, the Colosseum is home to a new exhibition, which delves into the mythologies of the god Eros. A principal classical divinity, Eros’s centrality to ancient Greek society is evident in the frequent references to this god.
This collection is an exploration of Eros who, despite such recognition, is one of the least defined and narrated Greek gods. It provides an introduction to the close relationship between Aphrodite and Eros, and the god himself as ‘an animating and ordering principle of the universe, the incarnation of the power of love, builder of social relations, metaphorical and religious allegory’ (www.pierreci.it).
This exhibition presents several famous pieces of art, including the archer Eros from the Capitoline Museums and the splendid crouching Aphrodite from the National Museum of Rome in Palazzo Massimo. A fascinating and enlightening exhibition, that invites visitors to return to ancient times and discover this captivating, mythological Greek god, in the astounding and atmospheric surroundings of the Roman Colosseum.
Durer e l'Italia
Scuderie del Quirinale
10th March to 10th June 2007
website
In a tribute to Durer (1471-1528), the Scuderie del Quirinale presents one of the largest collections of the celebrated artist’s works. Masterpieces have been contributed by the Uffizi Gallery and other Italian collections, along with several other galleries around the world, including Vienna, Washington, Madrid and London.
‘Durer e l’Italia’ (Durer and Italy) is a stunning collection venturing into the artist’s intimate relationship with Italy. It demonstrates the reciprocal influences evident in both Durer’s and other Italian artist’s work; influences drawn from Mantegna, Bellini and Leonardo, as well as his influence on the likes of Raphael, the Carraccis, Caravaggio, and the International Caravaggesque Movement. Highlights include the ‘Adoration of the Magi’ and portraits of Albrecht Dürer the Elder, and the Apostles James and Philip. Visitors will gain an insight into this restless and rigorous artist, who was a creative thinker, intrigued and motivated by human nature, religion and social responsibility
A separate, but complementary collection of Durer’s work will also be hosted, from 29th March to 10th June, by the Uffizi Department of Drawings and Prints in Florence to coincide with, and thus complete, this remarkable exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale.
FotoGrafia
Several venues within Rome
6th April to 3rd June 2007
website
An outstanding collection of contemporary photography, the Rome International Photography Festival (FotoGraphia) is an exploration of individual and collective exhibitions. For the 6th anniversary, this year, the chosen theme is ‘The Italian Issue’; an investigation into Italian photography and its continuous progression and reinvention. This concentration allows visitors to discover and appreciate not only the artistic heritage present in Italian photography, but the fresh and original forms and styles of renowned artists and the younger, newer talent of today.
The collection will cover the three genres ever-present and characteristic of contemporary photography; research and reflection, landscapes and photo-reportage. Such genres demonstrate the continual redefinition and movement of boundaries in contemporary art and the much debated concept of photographic documentaries.
FotoGrafia will take place in various galleries, museums and other public areas throughout the city of Rome, including Villa Borghese, Hadrian's Temple and the newly-opened Ara Pacis Museum.
