Although the municipality of Marseille, which owned a plot of land located near the cathedral de la Major, decided to build La Vieille Charité in 1640 as an almshouse for the poorest members of society, it is only in 1670 that a native of the region, Pierre Puget, the King’s Architect, gave true impetus to the project.
Built in pink and white stone extracted from a small quarry to the north of Marseille, the building is located in the Panier neighbourhood and is doubtless its most outstanding architectural gem. Right from the start, visitors are struck by the uniformity of the style of the former almshouse which includes a particularly noteworthy baroque chapel with an oval cupola.
This historic monument, which was restored at the initiative of the Town Hall of Marseille between 1961 and 1986, now houses several municipal museums: the Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of African, Oceanian and Amerindian Arts, and hosts many temporary exhibitions.
