A fascinating artistic path.A European artist of considerable importance, Jacob Jordaens has never yet been the sole subject of an exhibition on French soil. A veritable event, this retrospective brings together more than a hundred paintings, sketches and drawings from French, European and North American collections.Jordaens' stylistic evolution makes him an exemplary artist of an age which was marked by a strong desire for aesthetic renewal. From late Mannerism, characterised by the use of light colours, his work evolved into a Caravaggio-inspired style around 1610 before entering into the orbit of Rubens, which led him to produce vigorous artwork with a sculptural plasticity and a sonorous palette with an intense lyricism.A figure in the history of great scholarly painting, yet without renouncing a register anchored in popular culture, he was to become one of the most authentic of the great Flemish masters.
