Nagoya Castle
In the early 17th Century construction of the castle was ordered by Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa soon after he had pacified the feuding warlords of Japan, uniting the country for the first time and leading the country into a new era. The castle was bombed extensively during WWII, but was rebuilt and now houses a museum telling its history. A beautiful sight, especially during the cherry blossom season, this is a must-see for any tourist in the region.
Tokugawa Art Museum
Housing the vast collection of the Tokugawa family heirlooms, this non-profit museum is one of the most comprehensive and superb in the whole of Japan. Visitors can see the samurai swords, helmets and other military pieces that were an essential part of life during feudal times - and in the days of peace after Ieyasu Tokugawa came to power. The museum also owns most of the illustrated 'Tale of Genji' which dates from the 12th Century.
Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art
The Aichi Arts Centre is a grand cultural complex in the Sakae district. Housing an art gallery, theatres, concert halls and an art library in twelve stories, there is always something of interest going on here. The museum's collection features international and domestic works form the twentieth century including paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Gustav Klimt and Paul Klee. Japanese works include masterpieces of Japanese style by Taikan Yokoyama.
Nagoya Aquarium website
One of the largest Aquariums in Japan, this impressive facility showcases five aquatic regions of the world including Japan, Australia and the Antarctic Ocean. Educational and fun for all the family, there are daily performances in the outside pool, including trained dolphins. Open daily except for Mondays. Seven minutes from Nagoyako subway station, exit 3.
Noritake Garden website
Discover the history of the famous ceramics manufacturer Noritake Company within this attractive facility, dedicated to showcasing the company's products and processes over the years. Within the grounds of this spacious garden are exhibits, tours and demonstrations on how china is made, painted and glazed. Souvenirs can be purchase from the Craft centre and refreshments from the restaurant in the garden. Five minutes from Kamejima subway station.
