The Louvre Museum

One a palace home to the kings of France, the Louvre Museum is now the largest museum in Paris and possesses one of the richest and most impressive art collections in the world. It is in this museum that visitors throng to see and photograph Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting, the Mona Lisa.

Located at city center in the Tuileries Gardens, the Louvre Museum faces the Carrousel gardens, being bordered on its left side by the Seine and by Rue de Rivoli on its right. One enters the museum by the Napoleon esplanade, dominated by the Pyramids, striking metal and glass structures designed in 1989 by the American architect of Chinese origin, I.M. Pei.

The Louvre Museum possesses a huge collection of 455,000 works of art, 35,000 of which are on view to the public, ranging from the Middle Ages to 1848. The collections are organized into eight different sections covering periods of ancient Asian, Greek, Roman and Egyptian history, the Islamic arts, sculptures, decorative items, paintings and the graphic arts.

Open:

9.00 am to 6.00 pm every day, except Tuesday
Late opening until 9:45 pm on Wednesday and Friday.
Closed on bank holidays: 1^st January, 1^st May, 15^th August and 25^th December.
Admission to the Louvre is free on the first Sunday of every month.
