The business district of Paris and home to many of the cities tallest buildings, La Défense lies to the Northwest of Paris. Surrounding the Esplanade du General de Gaulle are the headquarters of many financial institutions and telecommunications companies. In the 1930s, the famous French architects Le Corbusier and Auguste Perret spearheaded plans to expand the area with their designs for modernist skyscrapers, but sadly the plans never came to fruition due to the Great Depression of the same era. Today it is a thriving business centre, the largest in Europe.
