Le Marais (meaning “the marsh” in French) is a district that spreads across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Right Bank of the Seine. Traditionally this was known as a bourgeois area. Today, it is known for the rue des Rosiers which is a major centre of the Jewish community with restaurants and outlets selling kosher food and falafel and specialist Jewish bookstores. The famous rue des Francs-Bourgeois is one of the rare streets in Paris that is completely open on Sundays. The neighbourhood is also well known for its gay nightlife and features many gay cafés, cabarets, nightclubs and shops. |
