Begun in 1163 but not completed until 1361, it fell into ruin after the revolution but was brought back to life after the success of Victor Hugo's 1831 novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’. The building has been the subject of many alterations and restorations over the years. The addition of the gargoyles, spire and self-sculpture by architect Eugene Voillet-le Duc remain areas of contention. Today Notre Dame is the seat of the archbishop of Paris and remains a Roman Catholic Cathedral. It is one of the city’s most important monuments and features of the cathedral include the façade, the North and South stained glass Rose windows and the organ.Open: 7:45 am to 6:45 pm daily The circulation of visitors is partially interrupted during Masses and Services. |
