North of the Tuileries Gardens in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, the Place Vendôme is known as the preferred location for many of the leading fashion designers to have their boutiques. Designed by the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart during the reign of Louis XIV, the square takes the form of an octagon, with only two openings, one at each end. At the heart of the square is a column erected by Napoleon to celebrate his victory of Austerlitz. The residences were built for the wealthy and feature many architectural details including Corinthian Pilastres. It is also the starting place of Rue de la Paix, one of the city's fashionable shopping streets. |
